Jason William Siesser, 46, who lives in the US state of Missouri, admitted to authorities that he twice tried to get "dimethyl mercury" through a platform where illegal products can be purchased and connected to a special scanner, the Independent reported.
Siesser first sought to pay for dimethyl Mercury in 2018 with Bitcoin, which is described as a "chemical weapon" when it is not used for scientific research purposes.
The U.S. Justice Department said Siesser, whose first attempt to buy two 10-milliliter chemicals failed, tried to pay for three 10-milliliter chemicals orders with $ 150 worth of Bitcoin a month later.
The ministry said it was possible that 300 people had been killed with the chemicals Siesser wanted to order.
At a hearing in U.S. District Court, Siesser was sentenced to 12 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Only a few drops of dimethyl mercury, which is highly toxic, can be fatal.
